The case as established

After the first London case, Peter Grant and Nightingale continue the Folly’s work. A jazz musician dies, and the magical trace Peter finds in the music draws the inquiry through Soho. Peter’s father is a jazz musician, so this investigation brings his family and his professional life close together. The novel also follows the aftermath of the earlier case and tests what Peter can do with his still developing magical training. The trail is shaped by performance, nightlife and a threat that cannot be understood through ordinary witness statements alone.

The Soho investigation makes vestigia, the lingering impression of magic, central to Peter’s detective practice. It also expands his view of who can use magic in London.
